FastmailIndie

Privacy-focused email, no Google, no ads

[01] Verdict

Fastmail is Australian, independently owned since the 1999 founding, and one of the few credible Gmail alternatives that supports custom domains properly. The Individual plan is $5/month annual ($60/year), 50GB storage, full IMAP/JMAP/CalDAV/CardDAV.

No ads, no scanning, no AI training on your mail. Calendar and contacts are included. The JMAP protocol they co-invented is genuinely faster than IMAP for big mailboxes. Two-factor and app passwords work properly.

Downsides: no end-to-end encryption like Proton, Australian jurisdiction (Five Eyes) is a non-starter for some threat models, and the web UI feels dated next to Gmail's. Migration tools from Gmail/Outlook are excellent.

"The support is also only okay really - there’s no live chat support, for example - and while Fastmail has some good security credentials - is that really enough to justify its price tag?"
